SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Evolution of Organic at Locavore
DESCRIPTION:Do your New Year’s resolutions include eating healthier\, making more responsible purchasing decisions\, or lessening your footprint on the planet? Do you want one simple step to achieving all of your resolutions? Eat local!\n\n\n \n\n\nKickstart your New Year resolutions with an evening at Central Oregon Locavore. Locavore is pleased to screen: The Evolution of Organic\, the history of organic agriculture\, told by those who built the movement that rejected chemical farming and set out to explore organic alternatives with a vision of sustainability.\n\n\n \n\n\n4:00-4:30 CSA Info and sign-ups available\, food from The People’s Pies Food cart\n\n\n \n\n\n4:30 – Movie Starts (86 minutes)\n\n\n \n\n\n6:00 – Q&A with Tom Elliot\, a retired organic farmer from Montana and board member of The Environmental Center.\n\n\n \n\n\n6:15 – 6:45 – CSA Info and sign-up available again\n\n\n \n\n\nView trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh_9ojGcYoE\n\n\n \n\n\nBefore and after the screening\, please visit with our local farmers and learn about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) options! The most crucial way a community member can help strengthen the food system and help contribute to small local farms is through purchasing a CSA share. CSA shares are a subscription to a season’s worth of sustainable\, locally-grown produce that is distributed to members throughout the harvesting season.\n\n\n \n\n\nPeoples Pies will be there offering delicious\, organic\, savory pies\n\n\n \n\n\nStart your 2019 with healthy intentions by supporting local agriculture and a healthy planet.\n\n\nSeating is limited\, reserve your seat now. This is a free event\, but donations are gratefully accepted. If you reserve a spot and cannot attend\, please notify us so we may free up your seat to another.\n\nReserve your seat here: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=htntlqdab&oeidk=a07efz7aa8fabefef5f\n\n \n\n\nCentral Oregon Locavore (501c3) promotes local food and farmers for the health of our community. We work for an ecologically stable and socially just food system in Central Oregon by improving access to fresh\, nutrient-dense local food\, educating the community about the benefits of sustainably produced food and supporting farmers and ranchers.

SUMMARY:BEND FOOD: Stories of Local Farms and Kitchens - Meet and Greet with Author Sara Rishforth
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Locavore for a Meet and Greet with Sara Rishforth\, author of: BEND FOOD: Stories of Local Farms and Kitchens\nThe views surrounding Bend don’t exactly conjure notions of traditional farmland. Snowy mountains frame open vistas dotted with gnarled juniper trees and sagebrush. By day\, the landscape is blanketed under a blazing sun\, while cold nights bring relief beneath bright stars. Despite these extremes\, agriculture thrives\, thanks to the hard work of dedicated farmers and ranchers.\nIrrigated fields support bountiful crops at Fields Farm and Mahonia Gardens. Farmers’ markets\, most notably at NorthWest Crossing\, bustle with people buying local produce\, dairy\, eggs\, meat and honey. Visit places like the Great American Egg to learn about the business of raising chickens and Jackson’s Corner for a delicious sample of what eating local tastes like.\nAbout the Author:\nSara Rishforth plays ukulele\, loves good food and adores her Kitchen-Aid mixer. After growing up in Greenville\, South Carolina\, she moved west to Alaska\, where she worked for nonprofit organizations\, made great friends and wrote for Alaska’s Best Kitchens magazine. Moving to Central Oregon in 2010\, Sara self-published two novels\, Adventures in Dating and After We Met\, loosely based on her time in the Last Frontier. Drawing from life experiences\, she was a winner of the 2013 Central Oregon Writers Guild Literary Harvest\, Memoir Category.\nSara\, her husband and their fuzzy orange cat\, Yam\, are remodeling a home in Bend\, Oregon. Yam does all the hard work. Sara prints season passes and sells tickets by the millions at Mount Bachelor ski resort in the winter\, along with supplying baked goods for her co-workers and friends.\nwww.sararishforth.com\n\nPublication date: June 25\, 2018. Available at Central Oregon Locavore\, Roundabout Bookshop\, Bluebird Coffee Company\, and other local bookstores plus online retailers.
